Idle Frontier
Western-themed idle game. Sole product owner from concept through live ops at Kongregate.
Context
Idle Frontier was my first full PM ownership role: concept through live ops, solo. A western-themed idle game at Kongregate: dig gold, shoot bandits, expand your frontier town. The goal was to hit the retention and monetization bar of top-shelf idle games (Clicker Heroes, AdVenture Capitalist) with a distinct visual identity.
Approach
The fundamental tension in idle games is that they’re systems games dressed as narrative games. Players think they’re progressing through a story; the real engine is a prestige/rebirth loop that keeps the numbers climbing forever. My work centered on:
- Shaping the progression curve so each prestige felt like a meaningful jump, not a reset
- Event and season content that kept long-term players coming back after the core loop stabilized
- Monetization tuning: what’s free, what’s premium, what’s ad-supported
- The moment-to-moment feel of tapping and collecting, which is 90% of whether a casual player sticks
Outcome
Launched as one of Kongregate’s most successful idle titles by engagement and revenue. More important for me: it was the project where I learned what “sole product owner” actually meant. Every call, every live ops decision, every post-launch fire.
